USCA (November 26, 2007) - The U.S. Cattlemen's Association (USCA) is urging the U.S. Senate to complete work on the 2007 Farm Bill when Congress reconvenes following its Thanksgiving recess. The group says a two-year extension of the current farm bill is not an acceptable resolution.

Deliberation over new farm policy stalled in the Senate when members of both parties proposed hundreds of amendments, many of which have nothing to do with farm policy. On Friday, November 16 a cloture vote failed to pass, which would have forced debate on the legislation.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the Farm Bill in July. The House package includes language that sets the stage for implementation of mandatory country of origin labeling (COOL).

Senate leadership has indicated that a breakthrough on the parliamentary stalling of farm policy could be achieved if just a handful of senators would shift their position and support cloture.

Rep. Goodlatte (R-VA) has introduced legislation in the U.S. House that would extend the 2002 Farm Bill for another year, but the bill has not yet been voted on by House members.

"USCA remains optimistic that the U.S. Senate can complete work on the 2007 Farm Bill before the end of the year," said Jess Peterson, USCA Director of Government Affairs. "Senators need to hear from agricultural producers and the message should be firm in that producers need and expect Farm Bill passage before the end of the year. Farm policy is all-encompassing legislation that affects rural families and communities across this nation. They deserve the full attention of lawmakers."

Established in March 2007, USCA is committed to assembling a team to concentrate efforts in Washington, DC to enhance and expand the cattle industry's voice on Capitol Hill.  For more information visit www.uscattlemen.org
